Rankin's work
John Rankin Waddell is a British portrait and fashion photographer. He shows each models personality in his photos, through makeup, poses, props, or just making them 'act naturally'. He uses lighting to cast shadows, giving dimension and darkening his pictures.
Rankin uses light to enhance his photos, which gives them more structure and dimension.
Photo Analysis
Jack O' Connell.
In this photo, the light is coming in from angle, creating shadows. This makes certain aspects of the photo more prominent; for example, the veins, muscles and bones on his arms. The wood background, the natural light and his partly relaxed appearance gives the photo a more natural feel, as if it hasn't been posed or set up at all.

refining ideas
I changed this image to black and white and increased the contrast to define their features, many of Rankin's photos have a high contrast level. this image is inspired by this.
here is the original image, although it fits with Rankin's style it is quite dull.
the original is quite dull with faded colour.
this orginal image has little contrast and definition to the face.

to improve, I increased the vibrancy and saturation, and brightened the image.
I changed this image to black and white by decreasing the saturation, and increased the contrast. this defines the face and draws attention to it. it contrasts from the bland, dark background.
I darkened this image and increased the contrast to create the effect Rankin does in many of his photographs.
